Best Venue for Live Music - 2011
Why does this perennial favorite win again? Let us count the ways: One, it's small, which means you can look the lead singer in the eye . . . as he's a foot away from you. Two, it books great acts. And by great, we mean Cat Power great. Peter Murphy great. Yo La Tengo great. Melvins great. Three, booking the same caliber acts that often sell out in LA means Detroit Bar saves you the trouble of driving north for an hour, spending dough on gas and parking. (Parking at the strip mall is free!) Four, it's next to an all-night taco stand. How often can you get a bit tipsy at a show, and then fill your belly with cheap, fried goodness while waiting to sober up—without driving? Five, if for some reason you don't want to watch the band, you can always play pool or lounge around in the adjacent rooms.
