Hate the bright cell-phone lights that pop up in the darkness at movie theaters? Jerks yakking as though they're at home watching a DVD? Love the communal experience of going to films so much that sitting at home and being a Netflix junkie isn't enough? Our solution? Matinees at AMC Tustin 14 at the District. We have no idea why—other than to assume the unruly masses must sleep in after a rough night of carousing—but not only are the pre-noon shows cheaper than those after, but they're also blissfully free of assholes. Every time we've attended, the audience has been polite, non-texting, non-glowing and . . . quiet. Doesn't make a difference if it's the latest blockbuster, 3D, foreign or indie. Silence is golden.
It's probably that way because that portion of The District where the theater is located is a ghost town. Last time I was there, 5 empty shops with for lease signs were hanging on the windows. The Bowling Alley changed names. The only good thing left in there is the RA Sushi Happy Hour Menu and cheap drinks. Well Sharky's too!
