Many of OC's illustrious watering holes are keen on attaching the word "lounge" to their signage. Some spots need to be reminded that most folks wouldn't apply that term to places with a funky smell and a barren, concrete floor. The Commonwealth in Fullerton actually lives up to its moniker by offering thirsty patrons a comfortable place to sip well-balanced Manhattans and martinis in a comfortably outfitted room while spending idle moments listening to good music or chatting with hip people. The dim lighting is enhanced by the backsplash of the liquor shelves, which glows with an ever-changing palette of colors. Instead of positioning patrons' knees at table-top height with awkward, giraffe-sized bar stools, the room is outfitted with comfortable, cushioned, high-backed chairs. But the main event here is the music; the monthly calendar is heavy with DJ appearances (soul, jazz, funk and samba predominate), allowing for ample rug-cutting on the dance floor. There are also quality live bands and hip-hop acts.
