From the Charlie Palmers to the drive-thrus, the humble burger has been both priced up into the stratosphere and practically given away on dollar menus. But at George Makri's La Habra burger stand, there is a middle ground. Here, the often-divergent paths of price and innovation cross. In his G Burger, a rustic hand-formed patty is only the beginning. You don't tell the server what you want on the sandwich; you tell him what you don't want. Say nothing, and you'll receive a towering pile-up of everything on the toppings list: greens, tomatoes, onions, cheese, teriyaki-glazed onions, Portobello mushrooms, slaw, grilled pineapple, a fried jumbo egg, pastrami, avocados, chili and, of course, bacon. It's all included in the $12 price tag, a low toll for a burger of this magnitude. A steak knife plunged through the top like Excalibur adds stability. Draw out the knife, and you accept the Adam Richman-esque challenge of finishing it. It's best chased with an equally loaded-to-the-nines side dish Makri calls G fries, his homage to In-N-Out's Animal Fries, but made with way better fried potatoes. $$
