We've welcomed the move of many folks to other states—say, Mike Carona, how's that federal prison cell in Colorado? But at the same time we heartily applaud the arrival of a relative newcomer. Former, five-time Republican congressman from Northern California Tom Campbell nowadays serves as dean of Chapman University's School of Law. In the political realm, he was a fierce free-market advocate, but unlike a majority of his Republican colleagues in these parts, he also championed progressive social beliefs. He stood by a woman's right to choose an abortion or not, and he never abandoned the principle that gay and lesbian citizens are entitled to equal rights. Perhaps Campbell's honorable presence in a sea of Neanderthal GOPers will inspire more than a few young Republicans to not turn so far to the nutty right.
