Best Neighborhood Bar, Long Beach - 2010
DiPiazza's Restaurant & Lounge
For more than a quarter century, this Long Beach punk-rock landmark has been serving pizzas and pitchers to fans who know the band they're about to hear could be the next Sublime or, for that matter, Shave. Young bands ranging from new-wave rockers Robots Rise to the house band of The Orange County Register are just two of the eclectic acts you'll find, and the memorabilia on the walls—classic punk and rockabilly concert posters—reminds you DiPiazza's is hallowed ground for underground music. Although it's a full bar where you're more than welcome to get plastered, you don't have to worry about the type of douchebag antics that afflicts other dive bars. This is a family-friendly joint, and for some reason, the lushes who gather here are friendly rather than aggressive. Just don't show up expecting fancy fruit drinks with tiny umbrellas: This is strictly a beer-wine-and-well-drinks type of joint, and who'd want it any other way? Punk rock, pizza and mimosas don't mix.
