Westridge Trail

Readers' Choice: Peters Canyon Regional Park

Not to be confused with another trail of the same name, the Westridge Trail is the closest you'll get to Coto de Caza without a gardening permit or a few million dollars. Hike east on the Tijeras Canyon Trail for about half a mile, then bear right onto the Westridge Trail. It's well-marked and well-broken for all of its length—and popular with day hikers and mountain bikers. Wildlife is abundant, from tarantulas and hawks to rattlers, mule deer and the occasional mountain lion. Once you've passed the tony airs of the exclusive enclave, the easiest place to break the trail on the south end is at Tesoro High School.
