Best Radio Personality - 2008
Utterly amiable and vastly knowledgeable, Bubba Jackson handles the crucial weekday 6-to-9-a.m. slot for listener-supported KKJZ-FM 88.1, where he plays excellent jazz and blues cuts from the 20th and 21st centuries. Now, many radio jocks can do the same thing, but no professional on-air personality possesses more genuine enthusiasm for the music he's spinning than Jackson. No, not even Henry Rollins. Bubba's getting up there in years, but the decades haven't muted his zest for the many styles of jazz and blues he plays while Southern California's more discerning denizens are getting ready for work or school and simmering in rush-hour traffic. A glance through one day's playlist for his Breakfast With Bubba show reveals tracks by Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Bernard Purdie, Ray Barretto, Lalo Schifrin, Herbie Mann, John Scofield with Eddie Harris, and Esperanza Spaulding. But whatever day it is, Bubba delivers the choicest cuts along with folksy commentary and generous praises when he back-announces his sets, like a hip grandpa who never lost his youthful passion for great music. More than most genres, jazz and blues desperately need champions like Bubba Jackson to keep their legacies thriving. His charm, knowledge and impeccable taste both benefit the music he advocates and help to kick-start your day on the brightest note possible.
Bubba is a Blessing in our family...and we all appreciate what everyone else see's in him! We are so proud of him! =]
Bubba, yes you can and yes you are! I am listening often to your program, and your musical blend goes always straight to my heart.
Well deserved! Even to a novice fan such as myself, Bubba displays an obvious passion for his work and an unmatched warmth and friendly dispositon. Thanks for everything Bubba!
I have been a jazz aficionada all of my life and Bubba is absolutely, without question, my favorite DJ! I love this eclectic taste, the fact that he appreciates the blues as much as I do and - most of all - his enthusiasm is absolutely infectious.
A Big Thank You for all the pleasure he provides!
I have known Bubba for 8 years and am continually impressed by the grace and respect which he bestows on performers and fans alike. I am thrilled that he is finally getting some of the recognition he deserves. KKJZ and all the rest of us are lucky to have him and his well thought out show. But what's with all the grandpa stuff? Do DJs all have to be young now? What in the world does his relative age have to do with any of it?
Bubba Jackson is the main reason that the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point has one of the best and friendliest atmospheres of any outdoor musical event. Attending the DBF (now in its 12th year) is like coming home to a family reunion that just happens to have great blues music. Bubba is the Best!
It was so good to read about the talented Bubba Jackson. I have heard his show many mornings whenever I am visiting my sister & mother in Orange, California. Columbus does have a nice jazz station, 103.5FM, but it does not compare to Bubba's show. Keep up the good work Bubba. I sure miss you.
Bubba you got it going on brother!! Keep swinging on this great gettin' up mornin!! A new day has come and the bells are ringing around the world for the rebirth of America's groove!!!
Hurray!! your observation is so right on. I've known Bubba from our on-air jobs in Denver and he was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the artist the aired then and he has just gotten(if thats possible) better today. He truly loves his work. And you only need to know him is to love him.

Those comments about Bubba were spot on. He does perk up the morning, especially for us jazz fans. Bubba also is a man about town, and we need more media personalities to believe in their music. Three cheers for Bubba Jackson.
We have known Bubba to be the best in the Blues Buisness, or any buisness, As long as we have been making music. Well deserved comments for our buddy!
