While Irvine's ever-growing Saturday Farmer's Market across the street from the Barclay Theater gets all the attention, Fullerton's version is better. In addition to the usual farmers' market specialties—organic veggies, grass-fed meats, crafts, artisan cheeses—the city also provided the organizers with a plaza specifically built to host stalls. Instead of having farmers spread their tents across a hot asphalt lot, every Thursday afternoon, Fullerton sellers set up in the city's vibrant, historic downtown, with activities for kids, bands and a beer garden where you can get sloshed amid cucumbers. When you tire of the fun, you can relax next door at the Fullerton Museum, one of the county's most underappreciated culture centers. But better go soon—the Downtown Market closes mid-October and won't open again until spring.
