Inactivity. Cronyism. Money pitness. Toxicity. Larry Agran. There are many reasons to be wary of Irvine's Great Park, but one thing is undeniable: It is pretty cool being 400 feet up in the air in a tethered balloon that gives a 360-degree view of the old El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and, depending on the thickness of the fog or smog, much of the surrounding pricey real estate. If you are loath to ride out of fear there is nothing to look at, you are sorely misinformed, Ms. Earhart. In addition to the green grass of the Preview Park and activity around the Hangar 244 nightclub, you can see one stretch of runway with a World War II-centric time line painted onto it and other sections of runway that have finally been chewed up for (alleged) looming park development. You also get a nice look at what is mostly the Great Parking Lot for recreational vehicles and recycled ecological waste, old barracks undergoing demolition, and other initial transformations of the old base. Irvine routinely presents events out there, such as the free concert and dance series introduced over the summer. The second-best thing of all is night flights that will leave you awestruck by South County's twinkling lights. The best thing is any time you ride, it's free, ranking this as the cheapest of cheap dates in these parts. What beats snuggling up with the warm body next to you in the gondola? (Important safety tip: Introduce yourself first!)
