The best approach to the greatest flea market in California is to have a game plan. Make a list of things to look for—Betty Boop umbrella stand, for example—otherwise, dear antique hunter, succumb to the overwhelming 20-acre-wide spread of every knickknack from the past hundred years. There's also beer, so that helps. Vintage clothing, Eames-era furniture, rare vinyl records, kitchenware, estate and costume jewelry, depression glass, old telephones—it's all here among the labyrinth of vendor booths set atop the concrete lot of Veterans Stadium. The market is set up the third Sunday of each month, and there are admission charges ($5 general admission starts at 6:30 a.m.; an extra fiver gets you in at 5:30 a.m.). Helpful hint: Most of the 800 dealers begin to pack up their wares around 1:30 p.m., which is when the best haggling is done.
