Run by the colorful, free-spirited Gary Quick, Sunset Beach's charming red-and-white café is perched in the shadow of the city's historic water tower; it's the place for artists, nomads, surfers, students and tourists hankering for a heaping plate of tasty American fare at any hour. With wood-paneled walls dripping with memorabilia—vintage movie posters, surfboards, signed jerseys—the coastal diner is as much about its quirky, cozy atmosphere and everybody-knows-your-name service as it is about food. But don't discount the food. The 10-page menu is crammed with can't-go-wrong items, from the gargantuan omelets (try the chorizo for $9.65 or Canadian crab for $12.85) to the handmade milkshakes served in a mondo malt cup ($4.95). $$
