Best Reason to Not Get Sick of Golf (2010)

Brea Creek Golf Course

What's that? Giving props to a nine-hole course with a huge flood channel running down the center that snooty golf purists call the Mini-Ditch (adjacent Fullerton Golf Course, where that channel continues, is not-so-affectionately called the Ditch)? Absolutely. For starters, it's only nine holes. Those guys who decided decades ago that you're only playing golf if you're playing 18 holes were assholes. Second, it's a par-29, with only two holes playing more than 300 yards. That means you can put to rest the single most destructive club in the history of golf—the driver, that ridiculously expensive behemoth you're sooo in love with, but you hit with maybe 10 times during an 18-hole round—and focus on the clubs that actually help you score: your irons. Third, it's only $15 at peak hours—and you get a free hot dog! Fourth, it's one of the handful of courses in Orange County to gain certification from Audubon International as a cooperative sanctuary, basically creating a habitat for all them pretty birds to eat, nest and multiply. No, it ain't Augusta National, but it only takes 90 minutes to play; won't break your wallet or spirit; and it's managed by Billy Casper Golf, the owner of which is just about the sweetest legend the game has ever known.
