X at the county fair is X right where they should be—why not? X’s place as an L.A. punk band is established—but like Dylan, Guthrie and Cash, there’s real poetry, art and righteous lonesome compassion in their catalogue. And putting them in a parking lot with little kids and little old ladies recalls the populist spirit of those old Appalachian picnics with the Stoneman Family and the Stanley Brothers. X knew it then as everyone else would learn soon after—punk is folk and country is punk and anyway they’re all just fast, wild homemade songs about the way things are and the way they could be. Like they say—this is supposed to be the new world.
