Putter About
John R. Wooden Classic Golf Tournament

Thursday is a good day to go clubbing. Golf clubbing, that is! Oh, yes, there is magic and wonder to behold at this year's John R. Wooden Classic Golf Tournament, as the extra-special lads and ladies who have shelled out $750 to golf at Irvine's lovely Oak Creek Golf Club show off their practiced swings. Sure, it's a lot of money, but it benefits the Special Olympics Southern California and Orangewood Children's Foundation, and that's pretty damn cool. Maybe you'd like to participate, too? Or you could just be a miserable freeloader and try to spy on the festivities from across the park. Your call.

John R. Wooden Classic Golf Tournament at Oak Creek Golf Club, 1 Golf Club Dr., Irvine, (714) 704-2400; Thurs., 9 a.m. $750 entry fee.

Spouting Off
Ocean Adventure Cruises

Considering their size, it is amazing how delicate whales are. A little naval underwater-sonar testing here, some global-climate change over there, and whales start beaching themselves on our shores just to get the hell out of the water. All snark aside, the state of our planet's ocean is truly reprehensible. And guess what, everyone! We're to blame. But the sea will have its revenge as every last, delicious fish becomes contaminated with mercury, causing the people who eat them to go bald and insane. Karma's a vindictive force, humanity. Start getting used to it.

In the meantime, it's worth your while to take a tour and see what our great-grandkids will be missing. Ocean Adventure Cruises sets off from the Dana Wharf and provides a great opportunity for whale- and bird-watching while we're still on this planet. Someday, we'll all be missed.

Ocean Adventure Cruises at Dana Wharf, 34675 St. of the Golden Lantern, Dana Point, (800) 979-3370; Daily, 10 a.m., noon & 2 p.m. $14.50-$29.
