Songs of Bilitus

In the 1890's, the world was introduced to Bilitus, an ancient Greek courtesan and lesbian poet, and through her found collection of erotic poems, we seemed to have a new literary masterpiece. But, lo and behold, the humble translator of such poetic treasure, the flamboyant-yet-straight Pierre Louÿs turned out to be the true writer—Bilitus only ever existed in sophisticated erotica. It was one hell of a hoax—and now the latest production to take the stage at the South Coast Repertory. Presented by Rogue Artists Ensemble, this thrilling, psychological tale looks at the true story of how one writer pulled the silk blindfold down over the eyes of the entire literary world. Touted as “Moulin Rouge meets Debbie Does Dallas meets Inception,” this world premiere performs at SCR this weekend only.
