Loving Repeating

The writings of Gertrude Stein are vast, to put it mildly. Tony-winning composer Stephen Flaherty and Tony-winning director Frank Galati were so enamoured of the late intellectual’s works they created Loving Repeating, a romantic musical in which every line of song or dialogue is from Stein. The story follows the author throughout her life, from her childhood in America to her move to Paris as an adult—and, most important, her deeply romantic relationship with Alice B. Toklas. Loving Repeating may take place a hundred years ago, but don’t expect the music to be period; Flaherty’s song styles range from jazz to pop to opera. Poems and prose used to fuel a modern play a century after they were written? Now that’s staying power.
