While it’s way too late in the game to see icons Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin as the original, savage political adversaries spouting Tim Rice’s profoundly poignant lyrics in this award-winning Andrew Lloyd Webber masterpiece, there’s still reason enough to catch any production with any cast. No play—and certainly no musical—has ever made politics this raw, rousing and rapturous, and gorgeously brutal stunners such as “Rainbow High” will remind you of the warped theatre of government while “New Argentina” might flare up some internal bitterness if you feel you’ve ever been let down by the hopeful promises of a politician who seemed too good to be true. It’s okay, it’s happened to everyone, as Evita points out, so go see an entire country (other than your own) get duped, then commiserate with some bourgeoisie buddies over a round of digestifs—it’s a viva la revolución tradition, yo.
