Yes, there is some definite irony in the fact that in 2001, Death Cab for Cutie released bitter anti-LA polemic “Why You'd Want to Live Here” (“you can't swim in a town this shallow”), and a decade later, lead singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard is now a Southern California resident (such a thing is kinda inevitable when you're married to a famous actress like Zooey Deschanel). But it's not something that Gibbard hides from, acknowledging the inherent humor during their show at the Greek Theatre this past August. This time around, they're taking it to the Fox Theater, promoting seventh album Codes and Keys, where the band (mostly) abandoned their trademark gloom for a more optimistic tone, seen in lovey-dovey numbers like “Unobstructed Views.”
