Day of the Dead Presentation

The Day of the Dead is just about here, and in case you’re curious about the story behind the sugar skulls, Long Beach Playhouse is presenting a lecture by former MOLAA director Gregorio Luke—who once said his definition of a good day is any day he can spark that moment of understanding between Latin America and the United States. Toward that end, he’s been busy—lecturing at the Smithsonian, Harvard, the Library of Congress and more—but this night he settles in for a comprehensive presentation on the Day of the Dead, which he’ll trace back to pre-Columbian times. Along with the lecture, the Playhouse will present a collection of altars designed by local artists. Show up early for excellent food by Lola’s, the much-loved Mexican restaurant on Long Beach’s 4th Street—hopefully they’ll bring out the pan de muerte.
