Dance Theatre of Harlem

For nearly 45 years, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has brought the inspiration (and, in some cases, a much needed outlet) of ballet to children in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Founded after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Theatre offers kids ages 3 to 18 pre-professional ballet classes mixed with artistic theatrical direction. This week, the troupe comes back to California (their first time in a decade) with three mesmerizing performances: Gloria choreographed by Robert Garland with music by Francis Poulenc; past-carry-forward choreographed by Tanya Wideman-Davis and Thaddeus Davis, music by Willie “Lion” Smith; and Contested Space choreographed by Donald Byrd with music by Amon Tobin. They're only in town for one night—don't miss this chance to be truly amazed.
