Corrugated Canvas

Cardboard, the medium of choice for movers and . . . well, just movers, actually, is also the humble substance that unites the urban art of “THIS SIDE UP.” Nick Paulo of OFFBRAND garments curated the show from the work of nearly two dozen artists from OC and Los Angeles who were given one month to whip up two pieces of artwork, each of which had to incorporate cardboard. The idea is to challenge traditional notions of the artist's canvas, but many of the participants come from street-art origins and have already brought their alternative sensibilities into mainstream galleries.

“THIS SIDE UP” will hang on the hip walls of ALTER EGO clothing boutique, located in downtown Fullerton's SOCO District, which kind of brings the show full circle. ALTER EGO is known for helping to support local designers, artists, photographers and DJs. That's why the pieces on display will be priced at no more than $150. It's a great opportunity to invest in some reasonably priced, cutting-edge art—or, if you're moving, to pick up some really cool stuff to line your packing crate.

“THIS SIDE UP” at ALTER EGO, 160 W. Wilshire Ave., Fullerton, (714) 871-7007. Open Mon.-Sat., 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun., noon-6 p.m. Through Aug. 15. Free.
