Don’t let the Podunk-sounding title of this festival put you off—now in its fifth year, this Chapman U film event offers a lineup of six classics, five of which are veritable Titans of cinema history (and thanks for throwing in two that prominently feature a female as lead—a rarity in all film festivals). First stop is the 1935 Oscar-nominated version of Victor Hugo’s French historical novel that was not a musical, starring Fredric March and Charles Laughton, and is hailed as the best version ever—yes, even though it doesn’t have Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman in it. If the 2012 remake made you wish the people sitting in front of you would just turn around and strangle you to death, try on this beaut—your eardrums will certainly thank you.
