Beauty and the Beast

Ask any child of the '80s and they can tell you with confidence which Disney Princess they identify with most. For the hoarder with daddy issues, it’s Ariel; the hangover regular, it’s Aurora; and for the bookwormy lover of hairy, angry men, it’s Belle. While there's been gobs of internet chatter lately about the negative image our favorite cartoon ladies project to youngsters—the idea that women need men to be successful and the image that all princesses are tiny-waisted and light skinned—we have to admit that it's still fun to sing along to the classic songs and make believe that someday our prince will come to rescue us from this hell of our own making. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, in Broadway musical form, is coming to the Segerstrom Center to captivate women of all ages by perpetuating the delusion that you can change the man you love. Sure, reality tells us the opposite, but, as Disney taught us, if you wish hard enough, all of your dreams can come true. We're still dreaming for dishes that wash themselves...
