Beat Happening

Hearing a name like Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, an unsuspecting schmo might guess they were a classic-rock band from, say, 1972? This Orange County sextet may derive influences from the most classic of rock (Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkel, the 1978 Scorcese-directed the Band documentary The Last Waltz ), but their sound is anything but old-school. Existing somewhere between the categories of progressive country rock, folk and gypsy trash-the addition of the accordion and mandolin are responsible for that last one-Dusty Rhodes and the River Band have succeeded in proving the love-at-first-listen theory time and time again.
