Battle of the Mariachis

It’s Jim Gilchrist’s worst nightmare come true—Mexican men in uniform, lots of them, and more than a few women, ready for battle in Southern California. Dios mio, La Reconquista is here with a vengeance! Ok, relax, it’s nothing to get your Minuteman Project panties in a bunch about; it’s merely the Battle of the Mariachis Festival. Vying for cash prizes, 11 scintillating bands get 15 minutes apiece to impress a jury of local community and business leaders. There’s Mexican cuisine from local restaurants, mariachi-themed vendors, a mariachi workshop and puppet theater. Intermission entertainers are dazzling, multi-talented teen Genesis Codina and Ballet Folklorico de San Juan Capistrano. Anybody sent Sheriff Joe a ticket?
