Ameryka

The Critical Mass Performance Group, an acting troupe that began in 1985 at UCLA, redefines the traditional structure of theater. They take a story (or an idea, a dream, or hell, even a sketch on a post-it) and start to meld physical with intellectual with visual—and along the way, perform their craft in various stages of development over long periods of time. Still with us? Yes, this is theater for the deeply cerebral. The group's latest play-in-progress is Ameryka, featuring a collection of characters ranging from Thomas Jefferson to Gary Cooper to John Coltrane and many more, each on their own dramatic journey for freedom across countries through the decades. It's epic, inventive, a little weird—and definitely not your average trip to the theater.
