Alabama Shakes

Alabama Shakes didn’t come out of nowhere—we mean, look at the name and guess, you know?—but that's what it felt like when their self-titled EP popped out of Rough Trade Records sounding like it was rescued from some dusty box of master tapes hidden up in the rafters at the famous Muscle Shoals recording studio. Led by “Hold On” and singer Brittany Howard’s heartbroken howl, the Shakes on that EP back then and on their new Boys & Girls album right now are a soul ‘n’ roll band in the classic tradition, fitting somewhere between Delaney and Bonnie and Stax Records in its Otis and Rufus eras. Think of the Fillmore West by candlelight when they light up the Fox stage with their own roaring take on a sound that’s aged like a bottle of bourbon.
