Even though critics panned the book (meaning the script, for ya non-theatrical types), a rousing dose of love was showered on the score of this celebration of Dominican-American characters who live in Washington Heights, New York City. In fact, it even won a Tony for Best Musical thanks to an array of exuberant compositions that range from hip-hop to pop—with some salsa and meringue thrown in for flavor. It’s another tale of the American Dream, of course, with souls struggling to hold onto their cultural identity in an Anglo world that still requires assimilation more than hybridization, but never fear, one day we’ll all be talkin’ just like the folks in Blade Runner—měihǎo de shíguāng adelante, dude.
