Remember several years ago when back-to-back Truman Capote movies came out? Or when those two Snow White movies came out in 2012? One film was grossly overshadowed by the other, ultimately deeming the lesser "terrible." Playwright Richard Greenberg narrowly escaped a similar fate with his Night and Her Stars. His play tells the tale of a corrupted 1950's game show called 21, and the contestant who was given all the answers. Sound familiar? As well-written and elegantly performed as Greenburg's play was, it was just a matter of circumstance that it was debuted a mere eight months after Quiz Show, a production about the exact same thing. And one of those became a movie. Yeah. But let's not undermine the brilliance of Greenberg and the natural ease with which pieced together Night and Her Stars, now directed by Matthew Anderson for the Garage Theatre. Yes, we've heard this one before—but not quite this version.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 30. Continues through June 28, 2014
