Elvis '68

Maverick Theater

Between the popular conceptions of Elvis Presley—“Young Elvis” from the '50s, and the '70s version of, er, let’s say “Elvis Plus”—was a man who offered a hunka-hunka insight into the human condition, examined here in one of the most fascinating moments of his career. In June ’68, as preparation for the famous ’68 Comeback special, almost-has-been Elvis did his first live show since 1961 in front of a tiny studio audience, and not until the Beatles played on that rooftop a few years later was something so epochal witnessed by so few. Writer/director Brian Newell returns with the principals of his earlier Elvis-ian effort The King for this production, to recreate the hour-long set where the King proved that he really was still the King.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 16. Continues through June 14, 2014
