How Long do Mexicans Keep Speaking Spanish in the U.S.?

[¡Ask a Mexican!] And do Mexicans believe in vaccinations?

DEAR MEXICAN: Our grandparents came from Mexico. The entire next generation spoke Spanish. However, in my generation, pretty much none of us do. One cousin's daughter does because the cousin married a fluently bilingual spouse. Most white people I know have long ago lost both awareness of what their actual ethnic roots are and the original language their people came to America with, if it wasn't English. Heck, British English can be pretty confusing. What me, my cousins and most of our kids know of Spanish is what we learn in Spanish classes. It's clear we lost our language treasure. Fortunately, we love being Chicanos. What do you know of this loss on a local or national scale?

Spangless Chicano

DEAR POCHO: The 2011 National Survey of Latinos by the Pew Research Center reported that while 91 percent of first-generation Latinos said they spoke Spanish "very well/pretty well" and 82 percent of the segunda generation did, only 47 percent of third-generation Latinos claimed the same—far higher than virtually all other immigrant groups, but still nearly half of the first generation. Far more telling is the language of preference for each generation while consuming culture: When it came to listening to music, the percentage rates of Latinos who listen to music exclusively in Spanish, English and Spanish, or exclusively in English changed dramatically toward preferring English between the first (49, 31, 18), second (18, 26, 54) and third (10, 16, 74) generations, respectively; the same happened with language preferences in watching television for the first (40, 34, 25), second (12, 17, 69) and third (5, 11, 83) generations. Moral of the story? As I've been saying for a decade, all Mexicans irrecoverably become Americans in el gabacho—only the stats change and always toward inglés. So much for a real Reconquista. . . .

DEAR MEXICAN: I am constantly in disbelief that so many undocumented immigrants—primarily Mexicans—risk life and limb to enter the U.S. to, as they'll say, "provide a better life for their children." Aren't they aware U.S. kids now are fatter, sicker and dumber compared to most of the rest of the world? Since U.S. kids are presently "mandated" to get risky, experimental vaccines by age 18, we now have epidemics of autism, asthma, learning disorders, diabetes, childhood cancers, ADHD, etc. We have the most vaccinated children in the world, with many more vaccines on the way—fodder for Big Pharma. Conversely, most racists think illegals are "dirty" and bring diseases into this country, even though it has been proven immigrant children are very healthy until they've assimilated into the U.S. Your thoughts?

Mother Warrior

DEAR GABACHA: While you're right about niños in the United States being a fat, lazy lot, and también about Mexican kiddies becoming the same as they assimilate, your tirade against vaccinations is puras mamadas. There was recently a measles outbreak in Orange County, one of the largest to have happened in the U.S. in years. While patient-privacy laws prohibit us from knowing the identity of the victims, stats came out showing vaccination rates in la naranja. The least-vaccinated pendejos? Areas where rich, stupid gabachos were the majority. Areas with the most-vaccinated people? Mexican-heavy cities. Mexicans, unlike gabachos, don't have the luxury of believing far-fetched conspiracy theories put out by celebrity chichis who put our children at risk—we've got curanderos for that.

nop, you are full of crap. English is actually wiping out local languages around the globe. Ironically, it is also happening in Mexico. But I guess you like a lot of people never go beyond the US borders and thus clueless.

This is true, in Mexico there are ads to tutor English its becoming more popular than 10 years ago. Also, because of the bad economy in Spain and Portugal some of them have gotten work permits for Mexico. Ads for Portuguese. Mexico is chaning everyone particularity in OC hears about Mexicans and Central Americans from poor rural areas coming up. If I were a Mexican I would go to Monterrey to do a pushcart business instead of going to LA and OC which are not only worst for your health but are two of the worst markets for rent for immigrants outside of New York or the Bay Area.

I'm 6th generation Mexican, born and raised in Southern California, with a father that came from Mexico when he was 4 years old, was forced into speaking English, in school, without ESL classes, was discriminated against, and he didn't want us to go through what he went through and also thought it was important to speak ENGLISH while growing up, especially because we were in the USofA, where this is our language. I have nothing against anyone speaking any other language, and I do wish my father taught us Spanish, but he didn't for many reasons. It is unfortunate that I do not know it, because it is such an important language to know within the US, not just California. And I agree with what a commenter Mike Frenes said. Anyway... Move on.............next......

Spanish is the language of Mexico, Mexico = mixtures of Medditerranian & various Amerindian cultures occupying present day Mexico (including the Areas the gabachos stole in that war in 1848). Wihtout the Hispanic cultures, there would be no Mexican, there would just be Aztec, Northern Mayan & other Amerindian Cutlures. You should change your last name, stop speaking both English & Spanish & stop wearing the European clothes you wearing & using the "Euro" centric devices you using. :P And to expose you're immaturity & stupidity even more, I'm Half Black, Half Venezuelan Criollo, Wilson is because my father is an Afro-Trini, so yes I do consider both Venezuelan Spanish & Dat luvli luvli Trini Inglash 2 be my languages. Entonces mete tu cabeza en tu culo porque el ignorante mas grande aquí eres tú.

You shut the fuck up you don't jack shit, and you filled with contradictions, you shouldn't even be having the last name hernadez & you shouldn't even be speaking English. The fact is Mexican is a mixture of Western Medeterreanian & Idegenous cultures that were present in present day mexico today. Before, it was the Aztec & Mayan empires & all the other groups they dominiated, given this division -- la conquista became easy.

I was born in Mexico and came here when I was 6 years old. I went to school In Orange County so my primary language became English because I assimilated to my surroundings. However when I was in college by major required a few advanced Spanish classes. I was embarrassed when some of the Asians and white people spoke better Spanish than me. Now I get paid more for speaking Spanish and will continue to read and write whenever I can. I think part of the problem is that Spanish speaking television is all shit. They broadcast nothing but novelas, cheap talk shows, and they never show the good movies with rich culture in them. I will try my hardest to teach my children Spanish but being married to a white man I will have to try a little harder. I am glad I never lost my Spanish.

Side Note: Apologies for making more than one comment because I hate to look like I'm blowing my own horn here unlike some people. My Apologies in Advance. What is interesting about Spanish is .... it's a pretty new language... English has about 1900 years of existance, Spanish....please correct me if I'm wrong here...but it only really has 600 years of existance & the first official grammar didn't even get written till the 1500s. It's a Mixture of Greek, "Vulgal" Latin, Basque & ARABIC, in it's original formula, and with the colonization fo the Americas & the Salve trade, many Amerindian words entered it, then sub-saharan african words, and with Modern & Post-Modern time lots of Galisismos & Anglicisimos have entered it. For me it's just interesting how it's still a young language & it has all the mixtures of East, West, North & South, not just in vocabulary & but in grammar structure too. It's really sad that so many hispanics don't even have the slightest clue that the muslim Moors were in the Iberian Peninsula for 800 years & all the rich things they contributed culturally to spain which then got brought to the Americas.
