Should Mexicans Pronounce Their Last Names Correctly?

[¡Ask a Mexican!] And why won't Mexican men meet a gabacha's family?

DEAR PHONY MEXICAN: One of my pet peeves is Latinos who pronounce their last names with Anglo accents. For example, Rod-driguez instead of Roh-driguez. I would love it if you would address this. Personally, I believe we Latinos should educate Anglos on correct pronunciation.

Gomez the Groper

DEAR WAB: Before you start correcting Anglos and pochos on how to properly pronounce Hispanic surnames, you might want to take a remedial course—it's Roh-drEE-gehz (emphasis on the second syllable; hence, the use of an accent over the i in Rodríguez). But your question reminds me of a Hollywood story that just might be apocryphal but is a good one. Seems there was a Mexican who wanted to make it into the film industry as a—take your pick—writer, producer or director. His last name was Torres, and he couldn't find a gig. Desperate, the man changed his last name to Towers, and he cried all the way to the bank. Moral of the story? While custodians of Cervantes want everyone to pronounce all Spanish words in a way that satisfies the Real Academia Española, people are going to call themselves whatever they want and change how they pronounce their own names if it makes them feel better. Of course, if a gabacho does it, then we cry racism all the way to the banco.

DEAR MEXICAN: I dated an illegal Mexican from Oaxaca for almost a year and a half. We would sit in my car on his breaks from work, or go for lunch at a Mexican restaurant. He never wanted me to call him at his work and never wanted me to come to his apartment. He said he didn't have a phone where he lived, and he wasn't willing to get to know my family or even meet them. Whenever I would question him and ask him when he was going to spend time with me and my family, he would say, "Next time" or, "Almost." Are all illegal Mexicans this vague? Was he afraid of being caught? He has lived in the U.S. for almost 10 years. Would you please shed some light on the living arrangements and the lifestyles of the illegal Mexicans and their thought processes?

Gabacha No Comprendo

DEAR GABACHA: It ain't the undocumented part of your Oaxacan that caused him to keep you at arm's length; it was the man part. Ever heard of Leykis 101? This hombre seems to have followed it to the teeth, so kudos to him and sucks to be you. Hey, Tom: Blow me up, ¡Ask a Mexican! style!

*     *     *

DEAR MEXICAN: I suggest you replace the ¡Ask a Mexican! column (as they are a dime-a-dozen, and don't we already know by now what they think) with Ask an Anglo, Social Conservative Male as we are the new minority and ready to be embraced, welcomed, defended and promoted as a victimized demographic. I volunteer.

Iowan Idiot

DEAR GABACHO: Sorry—Hugh Hewitt already took that pendejo gig.

I WORK FOR A UTILITY COMPANY.  MORE OFTEN THAT NOT, LATINOS DO NOT SEEM TO HAVE THEIR BILL.  IF THEY ARE ILLEGAL THEY MAY THEIR UTILTIES UNDER ANOTHER NAME PERHAPS?  MY QUESTION IS WHY THEY DO NOT SEEM TO KNOW THEIR NAMES WITHOUT CONFUSION?  ONE SAID ONCE THAT THEY USE BOTH MOTHER AND FATHER'S NAME.  IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT ONE DOING BUSINESS WOULD KNOW THEIR REAL NAME.  THANKS!

pinchi putos cabrones norte americanos! jajajaja!! Soy "puro" gabacho and I cringe when my neighbors say BarRANKa. English, especially American English, has some of the harshest vowel sounds. Come on folks, let's at least pronounce our street names like the majority of OC population.

So now do we have to pronounce each name with the particular accent it is derived from?  Should I say my last name as it is in German?  Add an Irish brogue to Irish names? Pronounce Italian names with an Italian accent?  Chinese names with the correct Chinese pronunciation?  America is losing that which made us great.  Being a melting pot, where honoring our heritage, yet being American, first.  Now everyone seems to be broken down in categories- ridiculous!

The majority of Mexicans are 50%-100% Amerindian, yet they hold up the Spanish side as if it is something to be proud of. Not only did their empire fall apart due to pig headed in-fighting but the Pope jumped ship pretty fast and went to the Hapsburgs for alliance. Then during WW2, neither the Axis or Allied powers wanted anything to do with Spain. I am not ETA lover, but I support them as Indigenous people, just as I support all Indigenous people of Abya Yala

I'm actually fascinated by the Basque language since it doesn't derive from any other language. Spaniard lovers? that's funny... should I call you an ETA lover? be nice.

When we have famous people like Davey Lopes and Johnny Gomes butchering their names, what hope is there for humanity?

We have a neighbor who's first name is spelled M-A-R-T-N   He pronounces it Marteen and I call him Marteen, but my father-in-law insists on referring to him as Martin which drives me nuts.

Yes Coco I know all about Franco since my gramps and uncles we're communistas but Nazi and fascist are one in the same. I just hate when Chicanos prefer to be Espanol a race of war crazy, religious fanatics, greed driving rapist then a Latin America race mix breed of people who has really has over 200 years of existence and has way more cultural art, food, and music to offer the world.

Coco Farias

Franco was in alliance with Nazi's but was considered more a Faschist like Mussolini. Usually people who say they fled Spain during the 30's say they "fled franco."

im not trying to be disrespectful but i laugh at people con el nopal en la frente naming their kids La britney, la destiny, la Summer or la sky. So yes, when you pronounce your name Anglo style.. it sounds rete- ridiculous (spanglish pun intended). Unless you can't pronounce it because you're parents didn't teach you- then you're just sad but we understand.

There is a good-natured debate among my own family about the correct pronunciation "McMahan"...is it "Mic-Mann", "Mac-Ma-Han" or "Mic-May-yon"? Depends on who you ask. Frankly I'm more annoyed by folks who think I don't know how to spell my own last name and want to "correct" me by putting "McMahon" instead of "McMahan". I guess ya gotta choose your battles. ;-)

Oh well, Spanish was not my first language, but my parents taught us to speak English to get along with everyone and not be hold back in school, since that was the norm in the fifty and sixty!

The poor Raza that was born in the US, & never spoke the language is who I feel sorry for. Not only because it's Spanish, but because it's useful. I was born in Mex, but raised in the US. I always say that English is my 1st Language, but never hesitate to help a newcomer that doesn't speak English. 2014, mi gente, let's help each other out.

People ask how to say my last name. I say it correct. My kids say is correct. Gabachos tell me I'm wrong. They say it like car- ran-za. It drives me crazy. When I was back in Texas everyone says it correct.

Being in gringolandia, changes you I have a lot cool white friends who and will always screw my name but I don't get offended by it. I meet some latinos who.don't speak Spanish and try to redo their name more Latino when a white person says it. I'm more offended seeing dark ass chicanos who refuse to say there Mexican and tell me their Spanish. My grandfather was a Spaniard who fled Nazi Span and lived in Mexico after the 30's but became a proud Mexican citizen.

@elenoreflores Were in America though..makes sense to Me..if Hispanics don't like Mexico, why bring it's culture here?  all these proud Hispanics but none of them want to step foot in Mexico..old White people have more guts entering Mexico than most Hispanics in California..  if you Hispanics are gonna listen to a racist Hispanic writer who lives in the OC and wont live in L.A. where his south of the border aNTICS ARE MORE WELCOMED, that tell everybody that the Hispanic race can't think for themselves..it's no wonder the democrats got the Hispanics by the balls.. why are Cubans mostly Republicans but the rest of the Hispanic race isn't?  hmmm.. I bet Cubans have the highest I.Q.s among the Hispanic race.

@jamiepizza99 @elenoreflores No, if Cubans have an inkling of success in this country its b'cuz they're given the red carpet treatment as soon as they get her due to the "REFUGEE" status they enjoy as soon as they enter "illegally". Unlike Mexicans who have to put up with the red tape and Bullshit from people like you.. but  your people  never seem to bitch and moan about that nearly as much as u shuld...

@gregbpc @jamminjda Sorry asshole ain't gonna happen... if rich, white, corporate America whose dick u suck  can get away with scamming AMERICA, then so can the "illegals" who work their asses subsidizing your way of life..just sayin'..

@asthetruth11 @gregbpc @jamminjda So you're saying CBS news is lying about the cost of illegals, as is the LA County?  You're probably right, they are not very credible, either.  Just open wide for Gustavo, Moxley, etc., and swallow.

@gregbpc @asthetruth11 @jamminjda Nah..No thanks. If I wanted to have someone PISS on my leg and tell me its raining I'd just tune in to FOX NEWS  or KFI or any number of the countless bullshit propaganda machines that pass for legit news sources these days. Nice try though AZZWIPE! :-)

@asthetruth11 @jamminjda 600 million dollars a year in LA county alone, to illegals in the form of welfare and workfare payments.  That does not even include healthcare & schooling.  I guess OCWeekly doesn't like links to credible news sources like CBS that don't go along with their pro-illegal mantral  lol.

@asthetruth11 @gregbpc @jamminjda Illegals don't support my lifestyle, they hurt it.  I work my ass off 60 hours a week, pay a shitload in taxes, and health insurance.  Illegals harm our schools, healthcare system, overrun affordable housing, etc.  I don't support illegals or corporate welfare.  I am for low taxes on corporations, as it provides incentive for investment and job creations.  You can take your union leaders dick our of YOUR mouth now, and Obamas dick out of your ass.
