Gogol Bordello are the Pogues on Folkways—punk energy and punk amplification set up to power not traditional Irish music, but the comparatively ancient sound and sentiment both of the folk musics of Eastern Europe. (Case in point: their Russian-language My Tsyganiada EP of 2011, which is a mouthful of lyrics going a mile a minute.) Newest album Pura Vida Conspiracy seems like it’s set up to be a breakout, which fits the Bordello modus operandi. This is a band all about breaking out, breaking through or maybe just completely ignoring borders and separations of any kind, and by now they’re surely peeking into the mainstream making plans for a midnight raid. They play tonight with Mariachi El Bronx, a perfect opening act.
