Whatever Happened to the Lazy Mexican?

[¡Ask a Mexican!] And will gabachos ever pick crops like Mexicans?

DEAR READERS: The Mexican wants to beat you to the carne asada case this Labor Day, so behold two oldies-but-goodies I amazingly haven't yet passed off as new in this columna. The first one is one of the Mexican's favorite questions ever; for the second respuesta, I've added some thoughts at the end, given it dates to 2007, yet the question is, just as the Mexican lust for gabachas, eternal. Enjoy, and eat 11 tacos de chorizo for your favorite Mexican, wontcha?

DEAR MEXICAN: Whatever happened to the "lazy Mexican"? Now all I hear is they're taking our jobs.

Mark Dancey

Ronnie Racist

DEAR GABACHO: Isn't that the stupidest paradox? Really, how can someone simultaneously be a yeoman and a layabout unless he's Shaquille O'Neal? But accusing ethnics of being both is America's most cherished immigrant insult. Every group felt its contradictory sting: Chinese (opium smokers or railroad coolies), Irish (drunks or ward bosses), Scandinavians (oafs or Vikings), Italians (slum dwellers or Mafiosi), Jews (rag-picking parasites or international bankers) and now Mexicans. The insult's popularity draws its venom from our Puritan forefathers, who considered life outside of labor sin; it's a miracle the phrase on Auschwitz's gate, Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Brings Freedom), isn't inscribed on the Capitol Dome. What's strange, though, is how modern-day gabachos forgot the Protestant work ethic long ago; meanwhile, immigrants continue to pick up Max Weber's flame without forgetting to enjoy life. Bested in both works and pleasure, gabachos seethe, grow fat and elect evangelicals—and don't get me started about faith without works and its relationship to American sloth.

*     *     *

DEAR MEXICAN: I had a heated discussion in my van pool with a couple of gringos, in which they made a comment that immigration (both legal and illegal) needs to stop. I replied jokingly, "Then who will take our orders at McDonald's or work in the fields?" They had the nerve to tell me there are several Americans willing to work those jobs, especially in the fields. I laughed. Wasn't there a study a couple of years ago in which Americans who were collecting unemployment were sent to pick strawberries, and they all quit within a week?

Pocha From the Central California Coast

DEAR GABACHO: Many readers have asked the Mexican about the study you cite, but I've yet to verify its existence. This makes me believe it's an urban legend along the lines of successful Guatemalans or Mexican women taking it up the ass to keep their virginity. Besides, who needs a mythical study proving gabachos don't work in agriculture when the government has documented this phenomenon? Consider the Department of Labor's 2005 National Agricultural Workers survey. The finding that's pertinent to us: 83 percent of America's agricultural workers identified as "Hispanic," and Mexicans constituted the vast majority of that figure. Gabachos, meanwhile, accounted for only 3 pinche percent of all fruit and vegetable gatherers. Many factors besides laziness can explain why gabachos won't take these jobs—terrible wages and working conditions, better employment opportunities for English speakers—but the fact remains that gabachos and crop picking go together as well as Mexicans and la migra. So, want to save America from the Aztlanistas, gabachos? Head for the fields and groves, wrap a bandanna around your face to fend off the pesticides, and start picking. And make sure there are no bruises on the fruit, lest the foreman dock you an hour's pay. (Modern-day coda: This is exactly what hasn't happened in the years since, which just happen to fall under the Great Recession. Farmers have begged Americans to pick their crops because of a shortage of Mexican workers—and nothing changed.)

I remember my wife and I asking each other this question (where're all the lazy mexicans?) the first time we went to Mexico, to the city of Oaxaca.  We're standing on a street that's inundated in bustling, busy people, surrounded by markets and shops full of people working; and we wondered "where the hell did they ever come up with that stereotype?"  I finally decided it's A: racism, pure and simple, and B: Mexicans have a different working style and rhythm, which would look lazy to a Northern European culture person.  Whites, from those N. Euro cultures, like to hit it hard and sacrifice themselves to the work.  Mexicans start off easy, picking up the pace little by little; and ending up the day having worked harder and longer because they didn't wear themselves out in the first two hours.

Dontcha love how Klavito is so busy he can't write the 25 sentences for his columna but has plenty of time to check in the next day and flung mud at his readers?

Does Carlos Slim pick strawberries?  Fcuk no, he doesn't.  I guess he's lazy then, ese?  Depending on continuous waves o wabs to keep the crops picked actually keeps growers from innovating.  Why improve your process when another 10,000 desperate campesinos has arrived and is willing to undercut their predecessors by a few cents an hour?

And yes, gabacho is an incredibly offensive racist term.

Great column. As a gringo who married a Hispanic female, I have an understanding of both sides. I don't believe in grouping by race but have observed that Hispanic people have a great work ethic, support family virtues and supply the community with labor that no one else will contribute to at a cost that often equates to what would be considered slave labor. This is America, a melting pot of cultures that all contribute to serving the needs of this great nation. The Hispanic work ethic should be praised and raised to signify what it means to be an American in today's economy. Rock on!

I grew up back east quite a few decades ago and knew plenty of white people that picked crops every year as seasonal labor. And no mexicans.  Now, it's a completely different story. It is what it is.

I worked in hotels and hospitals with quite a few hispanics (not sure how many were illegal, but probably quite a few).  I don't think as a group they work any harder than anyone else.  There were plenty that worked hard, but just as many that worked slow, would cut corners, or try to get out of doing things.

I got here cruzando la cerca and became an elementary school teacher and I don't think I stole a job. I paid tuition (as an international student). I had to work two jobs washing cars at some dealerships to save money for school. This pendejada of stereotype is lame. Mexicanos and Latinos in general work twice as hard as any other community. We are initiative driven individuals. We are so driven that if don't get a job, we become entrepreneurs selling elotes, tostilocos or paletas to provide to their families. Guevones los gabachos maricones!

Gabachos don't pick crops, or at least they don't do it any longer than necessary to inform their efforts to invent a viable crop-picking machine. Gabachos have a culture that urges them to channel their own inherent laziness into "Yanqui ingenuity." By no means am I saying that Mexis aren't smart or industrious enough to do this, too, but how much do they do it, en realidad?

the only way the gavachos would work the fields if they were payed no less than $15 an hour. witch would result is a huge mark up for groceries.

Trolls be trollin'. The fact is, there were very prominent German / Italian / Hungarian presses in the United States up until the Second World War. Ask any Lutheran old enough and they will remember when church services were still in German. Then again, the United States isn't next door neighbors with Hungary or Italy, but rather a massive continent known as America, the majority of which speaks Spanish. So thinking Spanish in the United States will somehow just go away because we put up a wall and predator drones patrol the border isn't going to change the fact that most of our neighbors "no espeaka da English". In fact, that is the mentality of a dying empire, which is what the United States actually is.

I can't wait til USA becomes a failed country as.MX ,El Salvador, Honduras, Nigeria, Jamaica, PR, etc. You brownies come to escape genocide, corruption, no jobs and then hate Euros upon which our laws, Constitution, art, philosophy and USA were created and which you seek. How screwed to hate the provenance and civilization you come to experience yet long for barbarian countries of origin. Now that's insanity.
