Does the Catholic Church Influence Mexican Condom Use and Virginity?

[¡Ask a Mexican!] And why are there so many Spanish place names in New Mexico?

DEAR MEXICAN: I had a conversation today with an 18-year-old, female, Mexican co-worker that completely blew me away. She has a 3-month-old baby with her 19-year-old, Mexican, unemployed boyfriend. They have just found out she is pregnant again. After listening to her sob about it, I asked her if she was going to keep the baby. Horrified, she responded, "We are Catholic; we don't believe in abortion." She also revealed that her religion does not allow her to be on birth control. My question is: If they are so "Catholic," why are they having premarital sex in the first place?

Protestant Pendejo

DEAR GABACHO: While I would love to blame the Catholic Church for all Mexican ills—hell, for all the ills of the world, since that pedophile-protecting institution deserves a millstone around its neck—the facts simplemente don't fully support the stereotype that Papism rules over Mexican sexual practices. On one hand, in the July 2011 issue of Journal of Women's Health, "Religiosity and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Latina Adolescents: Trends From 1995 to 2008" showed that Mexican chicas in the United States were historically more likely to remain virgins than non-Mexi Latinas because of their religious beliefs—but that gap is now nonexistent, and fewer mexicanas remain virgins until 18 than ever before. Reason? The docs who authored the piece think it "may be a result of the general decline in holding to religious tenents on human sexuality in the U.S. culture." Meanwhile, Antonia M. Villarruel, John B. Jemmott, Loretta S. Jemmott and David L. Ronis, in their "Predicting Condom Use Among Sexually Experienced Latino Adolescents" for the August 2007 issue of the Western Journal of Nursing Research, found "students who had higher levels of religiosity . . . had stronger intentions to use condoms and were more likely to have used condoms during their last sexual intercourse," and "the influence of cultural variables on condom use is speculative at best." In other words: Stop blaming the Church for Mexis not using condoms, and start blaming gabachos for telling our girls it's perfectly fine to schtup without a condom while they're teens. In fact, let's blame gabachos for all of Mexico's ills—we've been doing it since the Mexican-American War!

DEAR MEXICAN: I work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico (which I suppose would be in the state of Aztlán to you). We're a nuclear-weapons lab; I do research and testing on plutonium. Being from Illinois, I'm not very used to all the Spanish names and culture surrounding me. For instance, what does Los Alamos mean? How about Pajarito, the name of the mesa where the plutonium facility is? You may be amused to know that there is a program at the lab called "Bolus Grande," which I'm told means "big balls" in Spanish. We blow up plutonium inside the bolus grandes. Somebody once said missiles were just phallic symbols, so maybe it's that, huh? Anyway, if you could enlighten me on any of the Spanish names at the Los Alamos lab, I'd be much obliged, amigo!

Breaking Nerd

DEAR GABACHO: I worry for a country that entrusts its nuclear-weapons research to someone who doesn't bother to learn Spanish, especially children's Spanish, especially the translations of the places where he works and lives. Los Alamos is "the cottonwoods" and refers to the trees around the city. "Pajarito" is "little bird" and is derived from an archaeological site on the Los Alamos lab's property. It's all Spanish because New Mexico was colonized by Spaniards, who speak Spanish. And I just hope that whoever told you "bolus grande" is "big huevo" in Spanish isn't in charge of the next neutron bomb or whatever weapon Barack Obama is prepping to use against the Chinese.

MEET THE MEXICAN! The Mexican will sign copies of his books at the Yorba Linda Public Library, 18181 Imperial Hwy., Yorba Linda, (714) 777-2873. Fri., 6:30 p.m. Lecture, FREE; books, BARATO. GO, GO, GO and BUY, BUY, BUY!

Huajatolla in Colorado...a Ute word....but a lot of Mexican words are Indigenous...The USA and Mexico have many towns, counties and states with Indigenous Names....Michoacan and Michigan are prime examples. Guadalajara is Arabic.

it is what it is. May seem ridiculous to you but it is serious shit to them. They don't identify with the immigrants nor do they appreciate being called Mexican.

Really?!! That's fucking ridiculous...

I respectfully disagree...I know plenty of locals that wouldn't bat an eye at being called Mexican...

Explain Portales. Exactly what "portal" were they looking through when they named Goober Gulch?

Not only was New Mexico colonized by Spaniards, it was part of The United States of Mexico until the signature of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo on February 2, 1848. Until then what is now Texas, parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, parts of Kansas, parts of Colorado, parts of Wyoming and Utah where all part of Mexico. As for the Catholic church. Use of birth control is not allowed, Pre-marital sex is not allowed, and abortions is a big no-no. But just like in any other country or religion that tries to ban such activities, people tend to do what biology dictates has to be done. It only makes people feel REALLY guilty about it all. Which is why I am a big opponent of abstinence only education.

It may not be interesting to you, but I have been there many times, both in Albuquerque and in Santa Fe... calling someone a mexican can get you in a lot of trouble real fast.

I think the dude meant to say Bolas Grandes which does mean big balls in spanish, but it's the balls you play sports with not the other type of balls.

I disagree with you on this one Gustavo, the Catholic Church DOES forbid condoms and birth control. I was Catholic and every single Sunday the priest would talk about this and they were obsessed with abortion. Even though like half of the couples there were NOT married and they already had kids, they were okay with that as long as they kept reproducing lol. They even told us to vote for G.W. Bush because he was "pro life"

Why does it not surprise me that an employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory does not know how to use Google?

Interesting fact about New Mexico, is that if you call anyone there a 'Mexican' you risk being shot.. apparently it is a pejorative, to the locals.

Lots of place names in New Mexico are also Spanish versions of Tewa words, according to this Protestant gabacho pendejo (or is it pendejo gabacho?)

Why do my kids have to take out student loans when DREAMERS get cal grants? Why are American middle class kids burdened by $50,000 in debt once they graduate but DREAMERS are debt free (thanks to the income tax I pay). Doesn't seem right.

@Marcia Coro  It also forbids premarital sex so its a whole lot of crap. And if she didn't want to get pregnant again she shouldn't of been having unprotected sex or at least try to pull out lol

@STOPTHERECONQUISTA There are plenty of ways to get through college without debt. Take 9-12 credits per semester while working a full time job in the afternoons, evenings, or weekends. It takes longer to finish, but who's in a hurry when you're 21 anyway? Or you could apply yourself in high school so that you qualify for either academic or athletic scholarships. I had a friend who even got a free education by being in the college marching band! Hating someone else isn't going to get anyone through college.

@Mantonat @STOPTHERECONQUISTA it's not a matter of hate. It's a valid question that points out a big problem..... your methods of debt free education are interesting....but frankly, most students graduate with loads of debt....unless they're a DREAMER getting cal grants. Think how unfair this is......two students graduate with equal capabilities and education and compete for a job....the DREAMER will get it because they can negotiate a lower salary (they don't have to service the debt burden). So the American middle class graduate has $50,000 in debt and reduced employment opportunities...AND THEIR PARENTS TAXES PAID FOR THE DREAMERS GRANTS.
