Joni Mitchell’s classic song “For Free” observed that lone musician playing real good, for free, and, yes, for freedom. The Bowers Museum hosts its annual summer civic celebration of roots music, freedom and our grassroots musical ambassadors with the Americana Festival. For free. It’s your chance to show the kids where we all come from and remind the whole freedom-loving family that live music, sing-alongs, dance and learning musicological heritage is enduring all-American fun (with homegrown idiom, historical revisionism and harmonies, too). The lineup includes local all-around folk-bluegrass diva and music educator Sandii Castleberry, the versatile and groovin’ Chicago-style 3rd Degree Blues Band and the Eagle Spirit Dancers traditional dance ensemble doing their First Nation’s continental choreography. Get your face painted, make some art, sing loud.
