The longest running musical in stage history stops by the South Coast Repertory for a few notes this week. Written by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones (not that Tom Jones), The Fantasticks first performed off-Broadway in 1960 and is loosely based on the 1890's burlesque play Les Romanesques. It's the story of two fathers scheming to make their children fall in love—the daughter and son, of course, find out and are furious. They go their separate ways but eventually find a path back to their intended. The original production ran an astonishing 42 years. Catch this musical classic now performing in Costa Mesa, directed by Amanda Dehnert.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: May 12. Continues through June 9, 2013
