There was a minute there in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s when guys like Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Bo Diddley found themselves in front of full-on bands—this was rhythm ‘n’ blues recast as rock ‘n’ roll, the responding echo to Led Zeppelin et al and the engine within San Francisco’s Stone Foxes. Between Slim Harpo covers and their own Bonham-ed out originals, they don’t so much revive longhair headshop riff rock as shoot 50,000 watts of electricity right into its heart. Latest album Bears and Bulls is the kind of thing that makes a bar build a decent whiskey collection.
