Circus Vargas started as a revival circus in 1969 to restore and revitalize a more Barnum-ian ethos, but by 2005, it had fallen on hard times. Then, however, as told in an adorable LA Times piece, former performers stepped up to become current owners and keep the bright lights blazing. Now Circus Vargas presents a tightly drilled and highly skilled set of old-school-meets-new-school artistes, promising “a touch of Broadway” alongside the jugglers, aerialists, clowns and more. Vargas’s recent shift to an animal-free show rankled those no longer impressed by the glory and power of the perfect human form, but those who love spectacle for the sake of spectacle—that’s the point of spectacle, people!—won’t even bother asking where the egress is.
