Behold Devo, kings of rock—or maybe just kings of this rock called Earth that we all happen to live on, lauded for their proto-posto-punko not-really-new-wave music and laughed at by disbelievers for their decades of depressingly impeccable insight into the decay of American society. Started in 1973 at Kent State, where echoes of the 1970 shooting still persisted, Devo has enjoyed (or endured) one of the most unique and bizarre trajectories in music—from fringe culture to pop culture and back, and with a surprisingly robust catalog and a bombs-away sense of humor always good for a few desperate laughs. “Whip It?” Sure, but what we’re really about here is that uncontrollable urge.
