If there was a rock ‘n’ roll song in the last ten or so years that sounded pretty much perfect from the first note—whether it was perfectly sweet or perfectly wrecked—Mark Sultan probably had a hand on it. Over the course of several transcontinental bands and his own solo releases, Sultan has established himself as the kind of natural they just don’t make much anymore, with a voice that would’ve won ‘em over in any decade from the ‘50s until now—and the same kind of easy facility with guitar and melody that made Chuck Berry think of ringin’ a bell. He plays this week with the Allah Las, who do LA ’66 Sunset Strip rock that woulda made Greg Shaw proud.
