More About

Yes, it's springtime!

When it comes to style, one of the easiest ways to usher in a new season is with your hair. Here are four spring trends, with tips from Rachel Williford, owner of the gleaming Preme Hair salon at South Coast Plaza.

BEACHY WAVES
In Victoria's Secret catalogs, models step off the beach and have perfectly tousled tresses. In real life, we step off the beach and find our hair has become a ratted nest filled with sand. Getting that windswept, effortless look takes a couple of tools and tricks. Williford recommends letting your hair dry naturally, then curling it with a rod or iron away from your face. Afterward, spritz on Davines Sea Salt Primer ($26) for added texture. "The stuff is amazing," she says.

SAY TEASE!
"Get out the rattail comb—the '60s are coming back," Williford says. Sleek, mod, midcentury-inspired sculptural styles ruled the runways at Fendi and Jil Sander. To backcomb your hair into a voluminous bouffant,"you want to brush down, not back and forth," she explains. Then, very gently, smooth out the front.

MORE OMBRÉ
The gradient coloring method is still a thing, though now people are experimenting with more dramatic colors. "We're seeing bright reds, pink hues, green pieces," Williford says. "When done right, it looks really, really cool." (Read: Don't try this at home.) She recommends using a color-preserving shampoo, as bold dye can fade quickly.

SIDE BRAIDS
A low side braid can be surprisingly stunning. "People are getting more creative with fishtails and other intricate styles," Williford says. Preme sells hair ties by Newport Beach-based Knots that are fun, colorful elastics that can double as bracelets.
