Are There Smart Mexicans Migrating to the United States?

[¡Ask a Mexican!] And how many illegal Mexicans are there?

DEAR MEXICAN: I work for a major news organization and have often heard the figure of 10 million illegal Mexicans. Unofficially, I have been quoted 20 million to 25 million illegals, most of them not Mexican. From experience with the government, I would say these numbers are low. Why the focus on Mexicans? They are far less alien than Asians or Africans, not to mention Guatemalans. Explain?

Muy Smart Man

DEAR POCHA: Trying to figure out how many illegal immigrants are in this country is similar to trying to determine who invented the margarita or what happened to Carlos Mencia. The long-accepted figure was 12 million until the Great Recession hit and dropped the number to somewhere between 10 million and 11 million. Of that figure, it's generally accepted that Mexicans make up between half and two-thirds. Further complicating the matter is that differing numbers get spit out by organizations with political agendas, whether left (Pew Hispanic Center), right (U.S. government) or pinche puto pendejo baboso (FAIR). My suggestion? Don't even care about how many mojados are in this country—just accept the Reconquista and be at peace with America's new reality. Of course, America isn't, and that's why you see the obsession with Mexis instead of those rapacious Canadian illegals.

DEAR MEXICAN: It seems as though all discussions about Mexican immigration center on "illegal," low-wage workers. But as part of NAFTA, many well-educated Mexicans have the right to work in the U.S. without restriction via the TN-1 visa. This sort of immigration seems to have no press, and a spin around Google doesn't show any websites discussing this other than ones covering the mechanics of the process. Why isn't this kind of immigration more visible? Any sense of how big it is? Has it had an effect in Mexico, either in a brain drain to the U.S. or just in encouraging more people to go into the sciences because of the ability to work internationally? Are the Mexicans complaining we're stealing all their best people? (That's the secret plan, isn't it? We grab your land, then your people—soon, all of Mexico will be ours!)

IT Gabacho

DEAR GABACHO: The number of Mexicans entering this country via a TN visa has increased dramatically, from 168 in 1997 to 3,376 in 2010, according to numbers kept by the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs. Mexico has a proud tech industry—the Mayans, after all, invented the concept of zero and were space travelers (and let's not even get into their scary-ass accurate calendar)—and such opportunities will only increase as Mexico becomes more wired and less dependent on Carlos Slim for its tech needs. You don't hear about this type of migration because smart Mexicans don't exist in the American mind. And I wish the TN visa were the main reason for the Mexican brain drain, but a narco war will do that to a country.

PREORDER TACO USA! Gentle cabrones, my much-promised Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America will finally hit bookstores April 10, but that doesn't mean you can't already order it (yes, grammar snobs, I just used a double-negative, but Mexican Spanish loves double-negatives the way we do cute second cousins). Place your order with your favorite local bookstore, your finer online retailers, your craftier piratas, but place it: My libro editor has already promised to deport me from the publishing industry if we don't sell enough copies! Stay tuned for book-signing info!

Regardless of what or whose numbers you look at - there's lots here. I humbly agree with el mexicano -- accept it. Our culture is in the process of a pretty significant change - I'll even up the ante -- embrace this change and help it do good things by learning the good parts. HOWEVER!!!! One BIG problem = Demaciado HOMBRES!!!!!!! I don't know any official statistics - but out of maybe 100 latinos here -- probably 70-80 are men. ENOUGH!!! The most wonderful things of the latino culture are the women; their values, compassion, kindness..... Well -- and the latino men are known for different things..... My vote is to a pene check at the border -- only allow las mujeres across.

of course a mexican would say just accept it. Why don't they just accept the South Americans entering illegal into their country.

Yeah, such an accurate calendar that it has no need to account for leap year. In other words, NOT accurate.

Mexicans are rude because they don't know any better. They really believe that is Ok to behave like they did back in the barrio - back in the family compound. And if you don't like it and react in any way - they will simply write you off as a "loco gringo'. Am I wrong ? YOU know what I'm talking about - we do understand the simple translations after all.

So if they let their tiny, mutant dog bark insanely at everything that walks by - endlessly ' Smile and say" Wow, you Mexicans sure have great, albeit loud dogs ! I love you ! And If you don't ? : "Loco Gringo !"

If they park their Silver 1992 Chevy Van in front of your garage for the 9,342nd time because the family that lives in the basement needs to move in their other family that lives in the basement - forget that you have to go to Walgreens to get cold medicine for your kid and just say "Wow ! You guys sure have a lot of mattresses on that van ! Where'd you get that particle board night stand? Neato ! Because if you don't : "Loco Gringo !"

So embrace the plastic lawn ornaments ! To hell with zoning laws ! Garbage overflowing ?! Litter ? 30% property tax hike to pay for the newly produced students of machismo 'love' in your local school !? Embrace it happily ! Yeahhhhhy ! I love this ! Please bend me over some more a f$%k me with a steaming burrito ! After all - I'm a modern man livin' in modern times baby ! And I love the abuse ! So, please, f&#k me up the @$$ in front of the Gazebo ! I'm a new age man !

: ) Hurray ! Hurray ! Hurray !

Drop another 30 pound frozen turkey into the melting pot !

I F&#k&^g love it !

Your amigo-Loco Gringo

Why would smart Mexicans migrate here when they know its already full of... other Mexicans? If they are smart they will most likely go to Canada which has a positive demographic future.

Of course you are right Mr. Mexican, the figures are different depending on where they come from. However, when that 11 million figure was first floated it was said it included all illegals from every country...and that the Mexican fraction was a percentage of that and in that Mexican fraction other latinos were lumped in with Mexicans (central, south and carib americans). As far as the TN-1 Visa, I have also heard that 2nd and 3rd generation Mexicans born here in the USA are allowed dual citizenship for just such positive representation. One can argue that this falsely inflates the Mexican Intellectual contribution to either country but I believe that it points to the fact that no matter where they were educated, Mexicans can and do achieve great things. Afterall, we are children of the hemisphere and have always been here, even before the pinche border. To address Economic Warfare's comments....boy you are ill informed!! The amount of capital, agricultural and mineral wealth the USA has robbed from Mexico since 1884 is far greater than any services that Mexicans drain away from the US taxpayer. This is over and above the free or cheap labor that Mexicans do for US companies and farms. Not to mention that companies like Swift pick up Mexicans at the border, promise them documentation, get the seasons' work done and then dump them in Minnesota and let them take their chances getting home or staying put. These companies also collect tax and Social security of which the undocumented never see a dime. Currently, not only did NAFTA break any kind of self reliance Mexico had by making it impossible to compete with American subsidized corn and soybean crops, but it also gave Monsanto way too much control over the markets. Most of the immigrants now coming are Indigenous people who don't speak English or Spanish. So Nuts to your economic warfare argument....its definitely is and has been in the USA's favor. On to the idea of peace in Mexico...every revolution in Latin America has been due to a rebellion of the Indigenous and mixed Indigenous people rebelling against what the white middle class is only now rebelling against in the USA , where less than 1% of the population control 99% of the wealth. However, what Europe and their colonist fear the most is the reconquest of the western hemisphere by its original inhabitants. Even though the USA has effectively neutralized its own indigenous down to less than 1% of the population, they still fear them enough to sow deprivation and predation among them. In Latin America, they drummed up money and popular will by instilling unfounded fears of communist plots bubbling south of the border. These were only pretexts to further massacres in non-combatant Indigenous towns where women and children were burned alive, leaving only the compliant and submissive mestizos in their place. The Civil Wars you speak of have the now unfortunate affect of uncontrollable drug cartels. These men were trained by the US military schools to be ruthless and highly technical in their cunning for strategy, distribution and violent manipulation to get their product to the USA. YOU made this problem Guero, you! Mexico is not peaceful...it is an oppressive regime and exerts most of its power by being a puppet to the USA. Now, the USA will use the drug trafficking and immigrant problem as a pretext for invasion. The seeds have already sprouted in the second Porfiriato where Slim Helu and his friends are selling everything that isn't nailed down to WalMart, Target and McDonald's. So....economic warfare : Mexico zero, USA a billion. Military Warfare, Mexico zero, USA submarines & aircraft carriers in both Gulfs , ground troops in Belize and Columbia galore.

It is very easy to figure out we have an exact number. 1. Figure out the basic over head cost of every single citizen that normally uses civil sector issues. 2. After that equation is made, find the areas where taxes to citizen do not equate and there is a deficit. 3. Then figure out about how much deficit is being driven by the illegal immigrants who do not pay taxes for the services. 4. Another way to do it is through hospital and school records, and of course the all to famous which street has cars parked in the streets and which do not. Then you can easily count the cars and guess per street how many live illegally in garages. That is a simple rough number that gives us an exact way of figuring out how bad the Mexican running from their own homes instead of fighting for freedom and jobs at home epidemic is. Other countries like Guatemala, El Salvador and countries in civil wars are understood why they run. The majority of Mexico is beautiful lands and very peaceful though.

Right on Mountaintough, I've yet to hear about the devastation NAFTA unleashed on the Mexican economy overhe so callled "liberal" media outlets in this country. The most we get is stupid commentary from dip shit radio shows like "John and Ken" or that other ass wipe Bill Handel and the other KFI clones. I wish REAL news shows like "Frontline" or Bill Moyers would give it the coverage it desrves to cut through the bullshit coming out of the mouths of assholes like EconomicWarfare Ins or ALVA.

Re: your date of 1884. Was that a typo? did you intend 1848? (No big deal, if so, I have edit fails before posting all the time.) If not, why 1884?

Some of your points may be arguable, to, difficult to prove, but I think your points made, as a whole, are pretty valid.

Exactly...U.S. citizens and legal residents never commit crimes like tax evasion or parking violations or take advantage of tax credits.

You're an idiot ... illegal immigrants use social services the least because they're afraid of the system , afraid of being persecuted for being an illegal. Also taxes and social security get taken out of their checks...yes my ignorant friend they too pay taxes. My illegal pals will never receive a dime back from ssi but all you "legals" can thank the illegals for contributing to your future SSI which I doubt will exist our system isn't ready for the aging boom that is happening. Oh in the spirit of tax season ... they also do their taxes because despite not having a social security # the government assigns them a number so that they're able to do their taxes ... Of course the government wouldn't lose an opportunity to make more money yet blame all its problemas on the mojados it's the American way !
