Dare we call Jake Shimabukuro the philosopher king of the ukelele? NPR called him a “master,” the thinkers at TED said he’s going to “revolutionize” the perception of the humble uke and Conan O’Brien was reeling after a live Shimabukuro version of “My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Live, he makes his little instrument howl, hum and harmonize with mind-boggling personal arrangements and a blur of fretwork. Has “Don’t Stop Believin’” ever been so powerful? His first book of song transcriptions was just released, so if you dare to follow the master, you’ll at least have a path. Or if you just want to reel at the depth of his inspiration and technique, you’ll at least have the schematics in front of you.
