Raunchily named bands shone bright in 2011 (see Fucked Up and Holy Fuck). Portland’s Starfucker encountered more potholes than their foul-mouthed brethren—Ryan Biornstad jetted over the summer—but the group turned sour luck into hooky glory on Reptilians. Now down to a trio, they strut with unusual pastiche, softening the icy lust of ’80s new wave with pie-eyed psychedelia. Yet Starfucker work within the tidy confines of pop music; for all its good vibrations, Reptilians is a somewhat calculated piece of song craft. The group’s calling card has always been its hippie-ish live show—prepare to see lots of kids dressed like Tame Impala vibing to sticky-sweet pop.
