He's a wealthy teenager who loves to fake his own suicides, she's a vivacious, eccentric 79-year old intent on living each moment to the fullest—together, they're a match made in romantic existentialist comedy heaven. Colin Higgins' 1971 unorthodox tale (for which Cat Stevens wrote “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out”) about a young man who finds his soulmate in a lovely, anarchist septuagenarian may be the least skin-crawling, children-cover-your-eyes example of elder love in cinema. With themes as central to life as they are to death, it's truly a romantic story for the ages—whether you're 18 or 80—as long as you're into the dark and bizarre at least a little bit.
