Let us now congratulate artist Sandow Birk, long lauded locally for his imaginative (and resonant) alternate-world work such as American Qur’an and Divine Comedy, in which Dante is a dude in a hoodie stumbling around the streets of California hell. This year, the venerable Pageant of the Masters is exploring the world of “make-believe,” which includes living-picture reenactments of Birk’s “The Great War of the Californias” series, which imagined in touching and hilarious detail a war between NoCal and SoCal and debuted at the Laguna Art Museum in 2000. You, sir, will now have actual humans in extravagant costume bringing your artwork to life—and you, sir, have arrived. The annual event also features living versions of pulp sci-fi covers from Amazing Stories in the ’20s. The pageant is fucking awesome!

Thank you, Chris! I've been waiting for years for a Pageant write-up that described it as "fucking awesome!" You may have had your tongue in cheek, but it was such fun having Sandow Birk's work in the Pageant this summer that I don't mind.
