'Hand Pulled: The Complete Shag Print Collection'

Grand Central Art Center

Even though his is a loyal tribute to the stylistic commercial art from the ’50s and ’60s, Shag has a distinct style identifiable from across the room. His vivid, nostalgic design has led to collaborations with the likes of Disney, Graceland and the Pink Panther, to name a few. “Hand Pulled” is a collection of more than 250 prints and etchings of his original paintings, most depicting tiki-themed scenes or cocktail parties with glamorous partygoers enjoying martinis and smokes. This exhibit showcases prints instead of paintings (after a severe accident in late 2010, Shag said he is taking some much-needed time off from painting), including a new limited-edition print whose proceeds will benefit Japan relief efforts. The artist will be at the opening and closing receptions, signing books, posters and merchandise.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 2. Continues through Aug. 14, 2011
