THE BRUE CREW
If you're a hophead, the Bruery doesn't do IPAs and really only has a couple of hoppy beers [Michelle Woo's "The Brue Master," May 27]. People who like Belgian-style ales and stouts are the ones who see how special the Bruery's beers are. Even if their beer isn't up your alley, it's still revolutionary from the standpoint of the ingredients they use, which I think has encouraged other brewers to be more creative. Patrick Rue's beers are at the forefront of craft brewing, and right now, American brewers, for the most part, comprise the cutting edge of craft beer.

TAKEN WITH AGRAN OF SALT
Unbalanced [R. Scott Moxley's Moxley Confidential, "Larry Agran, It's Time for You to Go," May 27]. Who are the park's opponents, and how may they have contributed (and may continue to contribute) to the delays and expenses being criticized? Follow the money interests of the park's opponents for the beginning of answers. Need an editorial on that, too, to determine the true, balanced picture. If Agran is "corrupt," where's the grand jury indictment of him? This editorial is long on accusations and short on any hard evidence—a "grand slam" without any pancakes. Also, fools disclose contingency plans in the face of anticipated opposition.

The police seriously need to learn how to care [R. Scott Moxley's Moxley Confidential, "The Hard Cell," May 20]! Our friends, children and family members are dying from the disregard and negligence of the jail staff. If a person is at this "rehabilitation center," you are in charge of a life. What is going on here? Enough is enough! My brother died in your hands six months ago. You STILL have no answer as to cause of death. While you tuck your families in at night, there are families who are left with only memories. We walk in a haze knowing life has changed forever. Our family chain is broken.
Yet you still continue to knowingly put someone in a cell to "share" with a man who is waiting for this opportunity to act on a "what do I have to lose" outlook. Were you hoping he would do this? Did you give him the go-ahead to "take care" of this innocent victim?
The truth always comes out, and you are in serious trouble. There is no way out of this abuse you conduct at your job.
I personally know many different Latino families, and yes, there are other "types" of Latinos and immigrants besides Mexicans. I have noticed that people lose their cultures in this great melting pot, and sometimes the only thing some people have left is their language [Gustavo Arellano's ¡Ask a Mexican! May 13].
Yes, if you live here, you should speak English. America is a country where English is the language spoken and understood by the majority of people. What happens if your child gets lost? English is a language to be learned. It's a must for your own personal gain, safety, financial stability and peace of mind.
No, if you live here, you do not have to speak it in your conversations with your peers, familia y paisas.
I'm so sick and tired of self-righteous people who, just because they can't speak a different language, assume all Spanish speakers can't speak English.
I speak English, sweetie; I just don't feel like it when talking to my Latina sisters, friends and family. Se habla con mas sentimiento y sabor en su propio lenguaje, ¿que no?

I think the reason a lot of Mexicans, both in Mexico and abroad, don't speak proper Spanish is the same reason most Americans don't speak proper English: It takes a fair amount of work.
Having said that, it's also important to not get too pedantic and to remember the main point of language is to communicate.
For example, the correct way to say "scanner" in Spanish is "digitizador," but nobody will understand you if you use that word, so you just use the English word.
And while I respect Spanglish intellectually, it still gives me the heebie-jeebies—but that's just me.
